Dental crowns are fitted to completely cover a tooth. First, the tooth is prepared for the crown by removing some of the tooth material. An impression is made of the tooth and bite to create a crown that will be the same size and shape as the tooth. A laboratory creates the crown, which is adhered to the tooth. Crowns are used for repair, as well as for cosmetics as part of a smile restoration.
Dental crowns are used when the entire tooth structure has been compromised. This is common with teeth that have been broken from trauma or have undergone root canal therapy. Crowns can be made from metals, ceramics or a combination of the two. Many people prefer porcelain crowns that match their tooth color and blend into their smile.
